I-5YQ was originally built as a protocol droid by the Incom Corporation, but his design and personality diverged significantly from typical protocol models. Equipped with an independent processor and a sophisticated, witty personality matrix, I-5 was unusually autonomous and often exhibited signs of sentience, a rarity in droids. I-5's creator, Lorn Pavan, a former Jedi Padawan turned information broker, added further upgrades, making I-5 a formidable asset in both intelligence and combat.
This partnership brought I-5 into the underbelly of Coruscant, where he and Lorn navigated the black market, espionage, and various deals to survive amidst the rising tensions of the pre-Clone Wars galaxy.
I-5’s life took a dark turn when Lorn Pavan was killed by Darth Maul. Left without a master and without direction, I-5 struggled to come to terms with the trauma of losing his friend. He spent years shut down and in storage until he was rediscovered and reactivated during the Clone Wars.
Following his reactivation, I-5 joined the Republic Medical Corps on the planet Drongar, where he became part of a team of medical personnel, including Jedi Padawan Barriss Offee and surgeon Jos Vondar. During his time on Drongar, I-5’s artificial intelligence and emotional depth continued to develop, and he formed new friendships with the staff, sharing in their struggles on the battlefield.
Following the rise of the Empire, I-5 eventually joined up with Jedi Knight Jax Pavan, the son of his former partner Lorn Pavan, after they crossed paths on Coruscant. I-5 and Jax became inseparable partners in the fight against Imperial forces, and I-5’s loyalty and insights were invaluable as Jax struggled with his role in the Empire's shadow. I-5’s abilities made him instrumental in Jax’s survival, often acting as the voice of reason and offering both tactical advice and moral guidance. Unlike most droids, I-5 frequently pondered philosophical questions, questioning the nature of existence, free will, and loyalty, which endeared him to his organic companions.
Through his journey, I-5 became a symbol of resilience and loyalty, embodying a rare blend of humor, intelligence, and a seemingly unbreakable spirit. He demonstrated that even a droid, initially bound by programming, could surpass those limitations and develop a unique identity.
