Character Spotlight: Anakin Solo

Named after his grandfather Anakin Skywalker, Anakin Solo was born to Han Solo and Leia Organa Solo 6 years after the Battle of Endor, one in a half years after the births of his older siblings, twins Jacen and Jaina Solo. His entrance to the galaxy during disastrous times. He first was targeted by Darth Sidious’ life force on Onderon, and then captured by Caridan Ambassador Furgan. This all occurred while Solo was still an infant.

Solo was raised on Coruscant under the care of the family droid, C-3PO. His mother, Leia had responsibilities as the New Republic’s Chief of State; his father, Han, was also occupied with government duties. He did develop closeness with his siblings, though Solo did somewhat keep to himself. He excelled in engineering like his grandfather.

Anakin’s connection to the Force seemed primal, more profound than either of his siblings. This trait was recognized by many enemies. Another notable enemy was Lord Hethrir of the Empire Reborn movement, who realized that the three-year-old Solo would be a prime sacrifice to the extra-dimensional being called Waru. His parents and uncle, Luke Skywalker did save him from this fate.

As he grew olderm Anakin became much more outgoing and mature. Midway through his eleventh year, he began his formal instruction in the Force at Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy on Yavin IV. While there, he made a friend in the young Tahiri, and showed some recklessness by embarking on an unsupervised excursion to the palace of Woolamander.

While there, he discovered a mystical golden lobe containing spirits of Massassi children trapped there by the Sith Lord Exar Kun. Anakin’s power in the Force allowed him to free the spirits. While there, he discovered a hibernating, four-legged Jedi Master named Ikrit- a living link to the old Jedi Order- who became Anakin’s informal mentor.

On a later visit to Dagobah, Anakin entered the same cave his uncle had during his own training under Yoda. While in the darkness, he confronted his own fear of following in his grandfather’s footsteps. He emerged from the cave a stronger and more confident young Jedi. He later helped recover Obi-Wan Kenobi’s lost lightsaber from Darth Vader’s castle on Vjun.

As his training continued, Anakin alternated between Jedi training sessions on Yavin IV and basic schooling on Coruscant. He was away from the academy when his siblings battled the Shadow Academy, but he did help rebuild the damaged temple and helped provide information the prevented the resurface of the Black Sun crime syndicate.

Luke Skywalker eventually promoted Anakin to a full Jedi Apprentice and personally trained he and his brother Jacen. Anakin began to look to Kyp Durron as an idol, as the bold and brash style displayed by Kyp was appealing to Anakin, to the point where he considered joining Kyp’s fighter squadron. To Anakin, the Force was a tool that should be employed whenever possible, to shatter the fortifications of evil. This philosophy put him in direct conflict with Jacen who was more of a pacifist.

Twenty-one years after the Battle of Endor, the Yuuzhan Vong struck at the Outer Rim planet Sernpidal by pulling its moon down into a fatal orbit. Just before the moon’s impact, Chewbacca threw Anakin aboard the Millennium Falcon, but was unable to climb aboard himself. Knowing that hesitating any longer would only kill them all, Anakin piloted the Falcon way from the ground and towards space. The moon came crashing down and, in the process, killed Chewbacca, Han Solo’s oldest friend.

Han deeply loved his son, in fact, Anakin was to be named after him initially. However, after this experience, he blamed him for the death of his wookie companion. It took months until they reconciled. Meanwhile, Anakin spent time on Dantooine, where his aunt, Mara Jade Skywalker, taught him not to over-rely on the Force. He then went to assist Luke and Mara in a search for lost Imperial superweapons, at which time, a con man named Chalco and a rouge Jedi named Daeshara’cor taught him the value of humility. Shorty after, Anakin fought in the battles of Dantooine and Ithor.

Just Before the Battle of Fondor, Anakin returned to the Corellian system to reactivate Centerpoint Station as a defensive weapon. Though he could have used Centerpoint to eliminate the Yuuzhan Vong fleet that was occupying Fondor, Anakin gave into his brother’s wishes that the station not be used as a weapon of mass destruction. Instead, their uncle Thrackan Sal-Solo seized the controls, then mistakenly wiped out both the Yuuzhan Vong fleet and the friendly Hapan navy. Privately, he blamed himself for hesitating when he should have acted, but publicly blamed Jacen for the debacle.

Despite Warmaster Tsavong Lah’s demand that the New Republic surrender its Jedi, Anakin remained a dashing public figure, like how his grandfather was a key public figure in the Clone Wars. Many assumed that the young man would eventually assume Luke Skywalker’s role and Anakin began to believe the hype.

Solo and his siblings fighting the Yuuzhan Vong

It soon became apparent that the Jedi Academy on Yavin IV could not be protected from the Vong collaborators of the Peace Brigade. Anakin rushed there, alone, to rescue the young Jedi students, including his friend Tahiri. He arrived in time and Talon Karrde soon followed with reinforcements, but Master Ikrit died in the fighting.

A Yuuzhan Vong fleet then arrived at Yavin IV, transforming the Great Temple and the surrounding jungle into a sharper colony. Enemy forces captured Tahiri and prevented Anakin from leaving the system. To save his friend, Anakin teamed up with Vua Reaouung, a former Yuuzhan Vong warrior who had become a Shamed One when his body rejected the ritual implanting. Rapuung died during Tahiri’s rescue, but he provided Anakin with a new understanding of the complexity of the enemy.

Tahiri suffered badly during her time in captivity. Anakin worried that the enemy brainwashing might drive her to the dark side of the Force. The two Jedi fought under Corran Horn’s command at Yag’Dhul, where they helped drive off a Yuuzhan Vong invasion force. During a quiet moment, Tahiri and Anakin shared a kiss, and vowed to become more than just friends.

Nearly two years into the war, Anakin spearheaded a bold mission into the heart of enemy territory. The three Solo children, along with a Jedi strike force, commandeered a Yuuzhan Vong vessel and infiltrated an enemy warship near Myrkr. Anakin led the charge through the training labyrinth to eliminate the cloning labs that grew Jedi-hunting voxyn. He fought with passion, but without hatred, allowing the Force to guide him in his actions.

However, in the end, Anakin sacrificed himself to help destroy the last bit of voxyn genetic material. Anakin’s death brought his parents to the brink of despair. It forced Jacen to question the Jedi path and pushed Jaina dangerously close to the dark side of the Force. His sister and the other escapees flew his body to Hapes, where family and friends gathered for a funeral. The funeral for Anakin was in Hapes, where the survivors from Myrkr (excluding Jacen) gathered, and friends and family. Everyone recognized Anakin as a hero, including small speeches by Tahiri, Han, Kyp Durron and young Tarc. After a memorial ceremony, Anakin was cremated by Luke Skywalker.

Anakin Solo's death was an impetus for his brother's transformation into the Sith Lord Darth Caedus. Though his legacy would still be that of a hero. While searching for being known as Abeloth, Luke and his son Ben Skywalker encountered Anakin’s spirit in the Lake of Apparitions. They assured Anakin that no Jedi since his death had been as strong as him.

Anakin's response was to tell Ben to not let other Jedi grow dependent on him and that Jedi must have faith in themselves.

Anakin Solo is remembered as a hero of the galaxy.
